Religious Education Intent Statement

St Mark’s CE Primary School is committed to providing a well-planned Religious Education curriculum, from EYFS through to Year 6. The teaching of Religious Education aims to awaken, develop and deepen pupil’s knowledge and understanding of the world around them, including religious and non-religious beliefs. Our pupils will learn about the beliefs that different people and cultures have around the world and understand that their world-view is one of many. Learning about different religions provides pupils with the opportunity to explore their own beliefs and find meaning in things they may not have been able to understand previously. Pupils will be given opportunity to reflect on their own experiences, relating this to their learning. Religious Education promotes and encourages our pupils to have respect and tolerance for others and develop a sense of awe and wonder for the wider world they live in

At St. Mark’s, we follow the Religious Education syllabus created by NATRE (National Association for the Teaching of RE), which covers Christianity, Islam, Judaism, the Hindu faith and Humanism. Our curriculum is also supplemented by the ‘Understanding Christianity’ scheme of work, which encourages and fosters creativity, discussion, curiosity and understanding. As a Church of England Aided Primary School, we ensure that at least 50% of the Religious Education Curriculum is dedicated to the teaching of Christianity.

Our desire is to create knowledgeable and respectful citizens, who demonstrate equality and spirituality as evidenced by our school bible quote: ‘Let all that you do be done with love’ (1 Corinthians 16:14) – a declaration we feel resonates through our school values and school Bible story, ‘The Good Samaritan.’
