Mathematics Intent Statement

At St Mark’s, we believe that mathematics is an essential life skill and provides a foundation for understanding the world around us. We aim to inspire curiosity and enjoyment in mathematics, enabling children to develop confidence and a positive attitude towards the subject.

Our goal is for all children to become fluent in key mathematical concepts, reason mathematically, and solve problems effectively by applying their learning confidently in a range of contexts.

We want our children to recognise that mathematics is an integral part of everyday life and is closely linked to many other areas of learning. By making connections across different subjects and concepts, children are able to deepen their understanding and strengthen their mathematical fluency.

To achieve this, we use a mastery approach to the teaching and learning of mathematics. Mathematical concepts are introduced in the Foundation Stage and progressively developed through to Year 6. In Nursery, we use Master the Curriculum as a stimulus for teaching and learning. From Reception to Year 6, mathematics is taught through the Maths — No Problem! scheme, following an “I do, We do, You do” lesson structure that supports children in developing understanding, independence, and confidence.
