Writing Intent Statement

At our school, we aim to develop confident, creative and independent writers who understand how to write for a range of purposes and audiences. Our writing curriculum provides children with opportunities to explore different text types, develop their own ideas and communicate effectively through writing.

English lessons are taught through engaging, high-quality texts that inspire and immerse children in meaningful writing experiences. Through carefully structured writing sequences, children are supported to plan, draft, edit and publish their work, developing the skills and confidence to become independent writers.

Vocabulary, grammar and punctuation are taught progressively throughout the curriculum, enabling children to build upon their knowledge and apply these skills effectively in their writing. We aim for children to become confident in transferring their writing skills across the wider curriculum.

Through role play, drama, book talk and purposeful discussion, children develop their vocabulary, confidence and ability to express their ideas, providing strong foundations for successful writing.

Handwriting

We use Kinetic Letters from EYFS through to Year 6 to develop fluent, legible and confident handwriting. Children begin by developing the physical skills and posture needed to be 'ready to write', before progressing through mark making, letter formation and, eventually, joining letters. This carefully structured approach supports children in developing handwriting fluency and pride in the presentation of their work.

Spelling

From Year 2 to Year 6, children follow the Read Write Inc. Spelling programme, building upon the foundations established through Read Write Inc. Phonics. Through a progressive sequence of lessons, children develop their understanding of spelling patterns, rules and word origins, enabling them to become increasingly accurate and confident spellers.

Magic Story Box

Throughout the Early Years, children are immersed in the wonderful world of stories through Magic Story Box. Through storytelling, drama and imaginative play, children develop their speaking and listening skills, extend their vocabulary and build confidence in expressing their ideas. These engaging experiences foster a love of stories and provide meaningful opportunities and purposes for early writing.
