Year 5 had a great first English lesson this half term investigating evidence of the outlaw Robin Hood! The children were faced with maps, witness statements, letters and codes to crack to begin to discover whether he was a true criminal. Over this half term, we will read the book Outlaw by Michael Morpurgo to find out the true story of Robin Hood! There are more photos in our album.

Year 5 have been looking at space in science this term and were given the task of creating models of either the solar system or their own planet. The children have created some fantastic work. Well done! Photos of some of the work have been put in the photo album.
Year 5 had a wonderful day at Jodrell Bank last week, where they explored its history, attended a fantastic presentation in the Space Dome, discovered more about the solar system through interactive activities, and took time to study the telescope itself! There are more photos in the album.

To finish off our history topic on the Ancient Greeks, Year 5 worked in groups to produce a short presentation based around either democracy and government, Olympic games, literature and theatre or art and architecture. They worked really hard on the research over half term as homework and then shared this together in class to create their presentation. Well done Year 5, you all did a great job!

Year 5 had a fantastic week thinking all things pizza! We started the week by researching and tasting different pizza toppings, making flatbread bases and designing our own pizzas using our new knowledge. We then worked in groups to make the base, cut the topping and put our pizzas together. We enjoyed trying them and thinking about what we would do differently next time! There are more photos of our preparations and our finished products in the photo album

In Science, Year 5 have been designing and building a marble run to demonstrate their understanding of the effects of friction and gravity. Their challenge is to achieve the slowest time, meaning they have to think carefully about their track construction and material choices. There are more photos in the album.

During Year 5's Science lesson this week we learnt all about gravity and its discovery by Sir Isaac Newton. We investigated the effect of gravity on 5 different objects/activities.
Dropping balloons with and without a weight
We observed what happened and discussed why this happened in relation to the effects of gravity and it's pulling force towards the Earth.

In PSHE- Year 5 were looking at conflicting emotions and we role played situations where we might have to make difficult decisions.

Iftikhar Ahmed came to talk to us as part of studies about Islam.
He told us all about his pilgrimage for Hajj. We asked lots of questions and then were able to create our own Hajj travel guides. We really enjoyed having a visitor in school and being able to get answers to some of our questions. We have added some of our travel guides to the photo album.

As part of Art Week, Year 5 have been finding out about interactive installations. We learnt about the work of Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang and his use of explosive art techniques.
We tried using these techniques with stencils to create our own mini nativity scenes whilst experimenting with space and scale.
Following this, we thought about the message we wanted our installation art to communicate.
Peace. Guidance. Togetherness
Finally, we designed a class installation around the Nativity bringing all our ideas together. There are more photos in the album.

During DT week, Year 5 were creating frame structures. We were given the brief to create bus shelters for the people of Shelton. Our inspiration was the artist, Morag Myerscough, who creates vibrant, inviting structures that range from bandstands to stage and even play areas. After planning out our designs, we worked in groups over several days to measure, cut, glue and finally decorate our creations. We all worked really hard and are incredibly proud of our work. There are more photos in our photo album.

Year 5 have been dissolving different types of sugar to see which dissolved the most after 5 mixes.
They concentrated on changing only one variable - the type of sugar - while keeping all other variables the same - water temperature, amount of water, number of mixes and size of spoon.
They found that the brown sugar cube dissolved the least after 5 mixes and loose brown sugar dissolved the most.
Over two days, Year 5 took part in Bikeability – a fantastic opportunity to learn how to ride and maintain your bike as well developing safety and road awareness. All the children improved their bike riding skills with some taking their feet off the ground for the first time! It was a real success. Well done to everyone who took part. See the photo album for more photos.

Year 5 visited the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery to take part in a STEM workshop delivered by the Royal Airforce. The children were given the opportunity to learn the science behind how aeroplanes fly, whilst working next to the legendary Spitfire. After assembling their own glider, the children then took part in a competition with prizes given for the furthest distance travelled and also the most improved design. See the photo album for more photos.

The children enjoyed a fantastic day exploring the source of the River Dane amongst the clouds in Buxton! They then moved to Tittesworth Reservoir where they took measurements of the depth of the Churnett River as well as comparing stone shapes and also playing Pooh sticks! Everyone had a wonderful day. Please see the photo album for more photos.
